What Angels Are (Catholic Teaching)
Angels are purely spiritual creatures, possessing intelligence and will. They are personal and immortal beings, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures. As messengers of God and powerful executors of His word, they inhabit the heavenly realm, constantly contemplating the face of the Father.
In the Catholic tradition, angels are not abstract forces but real, distinct persons created by God to serve His divine plan and assist humanity on the journey toward salvation.
Types of Angels
Scripture and tradition reveal a vast hierarchy of celestial beings, often organized into nine 'choirs' across three hierarchies:
- The First Hierarchy: Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones — these angels stand closest to God, eternally worshiping His majesty.
- The Second Hierarchy: Dominions, Virtues, and Powers — they govern the cosmos and the laws of nature according to God's will.
- The Third Hierarchy: Principalities, Archangels, and Angels — they are the most directly involved in human affairs.
We specifically honor the three named Archangels: Michael (The Defender), Gabriel (The Messenger), and Raphael (The Healer).
What Angels Do
The roles of angels are twofold: they serve God in heaven and they serve us on earth. Their primary mission is the adoration of the Holy Trinity, but they are also deeply involved in the history of salvation.
- Messengers: Proclaiming God's major events, such as the Annunciation to Mary.
- Protectors: Shielding the faithful from spiritual and physical harm.
- Guides: Assisting souls in making choices that lead toward holiness.
- Intercessors: Offering our prayers to God and standing with us during the liturgy.
Angels in Daily Catholic Life
Catholics are encouraged to maintain a relationship with the angelic world, particularly with their own Guardian Angel. Every person, from infancy, is surrounded by the watchful care and intercession of an angel whose sole purpose is to guide them to heaven.
Common devotional practices include:
- Reciting the 'Angel of God' prayer daily.
- Invoking St. Michael the Archangel for protection against evil.
- Acknowledging the presence of angels during the Mass, especially during the 'Holy, Holy, Holy' (Sanctus).
A Simple, Beautiful Truth
The presence of angels is a constant reminder that we are never truly alone. They are gifts from a loving Creator, companions on a pilgrim journey, and silent witnesses to the glory of God. By honoring them, we ultimately honor the God who created them.
