Ephesians 5:33 emphasizes the importance of love and respect in marriage: "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband." Mutual love and respect are fundamental to a strong marriage. Marriage is seen as a lifelong commitment. Jesus taught about the sanctity and permanence of marriage in Matthew 19:4-6. Faithfulness to each other is crucial (Proverbs 5:18-19).
Open and honest communication is essential. James 1:19 encourages being "quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry." Good communication fosters understanding and intimacy. Colossians 3:13 advises, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Forgiveness helps to resolve conflicts and maintain harmony.
Having a shared faith and common values can strengthen a marriage. 2 Corinthians 6:14 talks about the importance of being "equally yoked" with a partner who shares your faith and beliefs. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages selflessness: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Serving each other fosters a loving and supportive relationship.
Praying together and seeking God's guidance can deepen your spiritual connection. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken," highlighting the strength found in a marriage centered on God. Marriage is a partnership where both spouses work together. Genesis 2:24 describes marriage as two becoming "one flesh," symbolizing unity and cooperation.

1 Corinthians 13:1-13. "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; ..." (ESV)
