The Simile of Light. 33 “No one who lights a lamp hides it away or places it [under a bushel basket], but on a lampstand so that those who enter might see the light. 34 The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is sound, then your whole body is filled with light, but when it is bad, then your body is in darkness. 35 Take care, then, that the light in you not become darkness.

Luke 11:33-35

“The world tells us to seek success, power, and money; God tells us to seek humility, service, and love.”

Pope Francis

  (Jorge Mario Bergoglio  17 December 1936 – 21 April 2025)

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Pope of the Americas, is a 76-year-old Jesuit Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a prominent figure in the continent and a simple pastor who is deeply loved by his diocese. Bergoglio advises his priests to show mercy and apostolic courage, and to keep their doors open to everyone. He calls for people to rediscover the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes and to follow Christ to understand that "trampling upon a person's dignity is a serious sin." Born in 1936, Bergoglio graduated as a chemical technician and later entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus. He studied theology in Chile and returned to Argentina in 1963. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and served as a novice master, professor, and rector. In 1992, he was appointed titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires by Pope John Paul II. Bergoglio's episcopal motto is miserando atque eligendo ("by having mercy, by choosing him"), and his coat of arms features the Society of Jesus symbol.

Cardinal Roberto Bergoglio, a renowned Argentine bishop, was appointed as Episcopal Vicar of the Flores district in 1993 and later as Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. He was elevated to the dignity of Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1997 and was later created Cardinal in 2001. He is the author of several books and has been appointed General Relator to the 10th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the Episcopal Ministry. Despite his popularity in Latin America, Bergoglio remained sober and strict, avoiding being appointed as President of the Argentine Bishops’ Conference in 2002. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, he aimed to reevangelize the city, focusing on open communities, informed laity, evangelization efforts, and assistance to the poor and sick. He launched a solidarity campaign for the country's bicentenary in 2009 and expected the impact of the Aparecida Conference in 2007. He was elected Supreme Pontiff in 2013.

  • “No one can grow if he does not accept his smallness.”

  • “Love is more powerful; love gives life; love makes hope blossom in the wilderness.”

  • “Mere appearances, dishonesty, and deception harm and pervert the heart.”

  • “To be faithful, to be creative, we need to be able to change.”

These quotes reflect Pope Francis's emphasis on humility, love, and authenticity.
