How to Find God's Will for your Life

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
   I will counsel you with my loving eye on you”

Psalm 32:8

   Praying for guidance and studying the scripture is essential in finding God's will. James 1:5 encourages us to ask for wisdom: "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." The Bible provides guidance and principles for living a godly life. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Regularly reading and meditating on Scripture helps you understand God's character and His desires for your life.

Seeking Godly counsel and listening to the Holy Spirit are ways to discover God's will for our life. Proverbs 15:22 advises, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Seeking advice from mature, godly individuals can provide clarity and insight. The Holy Spirit guides and directs believers. John 16:13 states, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth." Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading in your heart and mind.

Examining our desires and looking for opened and closed doors are also essential in seeking God's will. God often places desires and passions in our hearts that align with His will. Psalm 37:4 says, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." When your desires align with God's purposes, they can be indicators of His will. Pay attention to the opportunities and circumstances around you. Revelation 3:8 mentions, "See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut." Sometimes, God directs us through the opportunities He provides or the doors He closes.

God's will be often revealed in the commands and principles found in Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 instructs, "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." Living in obedience to God's revealed will is foundational. Ultimately, trust that God is in control and will guide you according to His perfect plan. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
