Jesus Anointed at Bethany

Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, John 12:2-8

Matthew 26:6-13 In Bethany, Jesus encountered a woman who brought expensive perfume to him. The disciples were indignant, thinking it could have been sold at a high price and given to the poor. Jesus explained that the woman had done a beautiful thing to him, preparing him for burial. He told them that wherever the gospel is preached, what she did will be told in memory of her, as she had done a beautiful thing for Jesus. The poor would always have Jesus with them, but Jesus would not always have him.

Mark 14:3-9 In Bethany, Jesus was seated at the home of Simon the Leper when a woman arrived with an expensive jar of nard perfume. She poured the perfume on his head, causing outrage among the people. Jesus rebuked her harshly, but he told her to leave her alone. He explained that the poor would always be with Jesus, and he could help them whenever he wanted. Jesus told her that her actions would be remembered in memory wherever the gospel is preached. He explained that the perfume was intended to be saved for his burial, and Jesus would always have the poor among him. He reminded them that Jesus would not always have him.

John 12:2-8 At a dinner honoring Jesus, Martha served, and Lazarus sat at the table. Mary poured a pint of expensive perfume on Jesus' feet, leaving the house filled with the fragrance. Judas Iscariot, a disciple who later betrayed Jesus, objected to the lack of money given to the poor, claiming it was worth a year's wages. Jesus explained that it was intended for Mary to save the perfume for the day of Jesus' burial. He warned that while the poor would always be present, Jesus would not always be present. Jesus' disciples were left to ponder the situation.
