When your Parents Seem Impossible

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (NIV)

Ephesians 6:2-3 emphasizes, "Honor your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise—"so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Showing respect and honor, even in difficult situations, is important.

Colossians 3:12-13 advises, "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Patience and understanding can help in managing conflicts. Ephesians 4:15 encourages, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ." Open and loving communication can help address issues and improve relationships.

Proverbs 15:22 advises, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed." Seeking advice from trusted, godly individuals can provide perspective and support. 1 Timothy 2:1 encourages, "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people." Praying for your parents can bring peace and invite God's intervention in their lives.

While honoring and respecting parents is important, setting healthy boundaries is also necessary to maintain your well-being. Galatians 6:2 says, "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." Healthy boundaries ensure that both your needs and your parents' needs are considered.

Romans 12:18 encourages, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Striving for reconciliation and peace can help improve strained relationships.  Lean on God's Strength: Philippians 4:13 reminds us, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Trusting in God's strength can provide the courage and resilience needed to handle difficult situations

  • Ephesians 2:10. "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

  • Philippians 2:13. "For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."

  • Psalm 138:8. "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands."

  • Proverbs 16:9. "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."
