Saint Gregory of Narek
Saint Gregory of Narek (c. 950–1003/1011) was an Armenian monk, mystical poet, and theologian, venerated in both the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Roman Catholic Church. He is celebrated for his profound spiritual writings, particularly the Book of Lamentations, a masterpiece of mystical literature that serves as a prayer book for many Armenian Christians. This work is often described as an "encyclopedia of prayer for all nations."
Gregory spent most of his life at the Narek Monastery, located near Lake Van in what is now modern-day Turkey. His writings reflect deep humility, a yearning for divine mercy, and a profound connection to God. In 2015, Pope Francis declared him a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his universal spiritual significance.
