Major Liturgical Seasons

  • Advent: Begins four Sundays before Christmas; a time of preparation and expectation.

  • Christmas: Celebrates the birth of Christ; lasts until the Baptism of the Lord.

  • Ordinary Time (Part I): From Baptism of the Lord to Ash Wednesday.

  • Lent: Begins on Ash Wednesday; a season of penance leading to Easter.

  • Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday—culminating in Easter.

  • Easter: Celebrates the Resurrection; lasts 50 days until Pentecost.

  • Ordinary Time (Part II): Resumes after Pentecost and continues until Advent.

Types of Days

  • Solemnities: Highest-ranking celebrations (e.g., Easter, Christmas, Pentecost).

  • Feasts: Important but slightly lower in rank (e.g., Transfiguration, Apostles).

  • Memorials: Commemorations of saints or events; may be obligatory or optional.

  • Ferial Days: Regular weekdays without a specific feast.

Liturgical Colors

  • Purple: Advent and Lent (penance and preparation)

  • White: Christmas, Easter, feasts of the Lord and saints who weren’t martyred

  • Red: Pentecost, Passion of the Lord, martyrs

  • Green: Ordinary Time

  • Rose: Gaudete Sunday (Advent) and Laetare Sunday (Lent)
