What Is Advent?
Advent means “coming.” It’s the special time when we prepare our hearts for Jesus, who comes to us at Christmas. Think of it like getting ready for a very important guest — cleaning your room, decorating, and being extra kind — because Jesus is coming!
The Four Weeks of Advent
Advent has four weeks, and each week has a special meaning:
Week 1 — Hope We remember that God promised to send a Savior.
Week 2 — Peace We try to bring peace to our families and friends.
Week 3 — Joy The pink candle reminds us to be joyful because Jesus is almost here!
Week 4 — Love We prepare our hearts with love for Jesus and others.
The Advent Wreath (Kid-Friendly)
The Advent wreath has four candles:
• 3 purple candles (hope, peace, love)
• 1 pink candle (joy)
Each Sunday, families light one candle and say a short prayer. The light reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World.
What Do We Do During Advent?
Children can understand Advent through simple actions:
• Be kind — helping at home, sharing, using gentle words
• Pray — short prayers like “Come, Lord Jesus!”
• Prepare — making room for Jesus in our hearts
• Wait — learning that waiting can be joyful and peaceful

Family Jesse Tree: A Beautiful Way to Prepare for Jesus
The Family Jesse Tree is a special Advent tradition that helps children and parents follow the story of God’s love—from Creation all the way to the birth of Jesus. Each day, families read a short Bible story and hang an ornament that shows a symbol from that story. By Christmas, the tree is full, reminding us that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises.
This activity turns Advent into a time of wonder, learning, and togetherness. Kids love the hands‑on ornaments, parents love the simple daily rhythm, and everyone grows closer to Jesus as Christmas approaches.
